Learn more about superbugs in meat with EWG's new report.
Factory farms and industrial livestock producers routinely give healthy animals unnecessary antibiotics to get them to slaughter faster or prevent infection in crowded, stressful and often unsanitary living conditions. This misuse of antibiotics is one of the leading causes of superbugs in meat.
Check out EWG's report now for all the critical information you need, including tips on how to avoid these potentially deadly bacteria.
We completed our analysis not a minute too soon: In 2011, nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics were sold for use in food animals - roughly four times the amount sold to treat people! Not surprisingly, the superbugs spawned by antibiotic misuse - which are now pervasive in many meats Americans buy - have become a direct source of foodborne illness. Even more ominously, antibiotic misuse threatens to make many of these vital medicines ineffective in treating a wide variety of human disease. Not long ago, most people who fell ill with bacterial infections could be treated easily with antibiotics and recovered quickly. But today, doctors are finding it harder to control many common infections because the microbes no longer respond to available antibiotics, increasing the odds that a patient will suffer serious illness, complications or death.
In EWG's new report, you'll not only find more information about superbugs, but also great tips on how to buy meat that's less likely to be contaminated, what the labels on your meat actually mean and so much more.
