If you are experiencing lower back pain, bloating and gas, there could be a number of reasons for your discomfort. Ranging from intolerance to lactose to an unhealthy lifestyle all the way to obstructions in the body, many things can cause these symptoms. Identifying and treating the culprit is vital to getting your body comfortable again. Have a question? Get an answer from a Medical Professional now!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • A digestive system problem called Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS causes many problems. With IBS, the nerve endings in your intestines overreact to food and drink you consume. When this occurs, the walls of the large intestine spasm, which prevent the contents from moving along. This causes constipation leading to pain, bloating and gas. To treat IBS, see your doctor for medication and modify your diet to include more digestive-friendly foods. Eating more whole grains and vegetables can help tremendously according to Roger Gebhard, M.D., a gastroenterologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Lactose Intolerance

  • According to Dr. Jay Perman, M.D., associate professor and director of the division of gastroenterology and nutrition at Johns Hopkins University, most adults have this problem to a varying degree. Lactose intolerance occurs when your body is cannot digest lactose sugar in dairy foods. Some symptoms are pain, bloating and gassiness. The easiest way to banish these symptoms is to cut dairy foods from your diet entirely.

Obstruction

  • An obstructed bowel keeps the contents of the intestines from being able to pass normally through the whole digestive tract. Hernias or tumors are the most frequent causes of obstructions. Besides lower back pain, bloating and gas, obstructions can also cause nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea. For a certain diagnosis see your doctor immediately for an exam and x-ray of your abdomen. "If you have unrelieved obstruction, there is a risk of ischemia, which is a decrease in the blood supply, and that can be fatal," warns Jay Pasricha, MD, professor of gastroenterology at the Stanford School of Medicine.

Appendicitis

  • In addition to the lower back pain, gas and bloating you would be able to identify appendicitis by a constant low-grade fever, nausea, vomiting and sharp pain in your abdomen. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect appendicitis, as it can be life threatening according to the Mayo Clinic.

Lifestyle

  • Lower back pain, bloating and gas are often a result of unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Stress, smoking or eating fatty foods are all major contributors. Know what foods are gaseous, for example, broccoli, carbonated drinks, chewing gum and baked beans. Eat and drink slowly, eliminate hard candy and gum and quit smoking. Ralph Bernstein, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at the University of California also suggests adding a leisurely walk following mealtime.
